Hi,
I may be moving to Pittsburgh next year. I was wondering if anyone who has been to Pittsburgh, PA can tell me about it. I have two teenagers and a nine year old. We recently moved from FL to NJ and now we may move to Pittsburgh. Is it easy to walk around places? How are the schools? How is the culture? My kids aren't big on sports, but I heard that they are big on sports in Pittsburgh. My daughter loves Andy Warhol, so when she heard we might move their, she flipped.|||It's become quite a nice place - the smokestack days are long past.
It has some very nice neighborhoods, and a clean, efficient bus system. And yes, it is quite walkable.
Besides the regular downtown, the university area of Oakland is a sort of second downtown, one much more cultured than "regular" downtown.
I don't know how the schools are, but most locals I met (of varying ethnic backgrounds) seem intelligent. Locals seem fiercely proud of their hometown, and regret only that careers sometimes take them elsewhere.|||There are some great museums like the Carnegie Natural History, Andy Warhol, and the zoo, I remember a small art museum in Brighton my mom would take me to for classes.
I went 2 school there, learned everything I know about geography there and that's 3x more than my history class does.

|||I live in Pittsburgh, and it is probably the most boring city to live in. There was a shooting at a gas station a month ago and then all the other bad stuff.... I wouldn't move here if I were you.Report Abuse
|||Most parts are walkable. Mt.Oliver is NOT. South Side is the best place. There's a water park, SANDCASTLE. And two theme parks KENNYWOOD and IDLEWILD.Science center, sports center. ETC. Ton's of fun.
And the schools are fine. Just check em out. =]

|||Like every town, there are good places as well as bad neighborhoods. Some good neighborhoods are in the South Hills area, Baldwin, Whitehall, Pleasant Hills, Bethel Park. They are for the middle class.
For the more affluent neighborhoods, try Upper St. Clair, Peters Township, Fox Chapel.
Nice place to live, nice people and places to see|||It's VERY nice~|||Pittsburgh has a lot of neighborhoods. There is a great deal of variety. We'd have to know more about you, your lifestyle, and your wants before going out on a limb and saying where you might feel most at home in our great city and region.
You'll want to own a home. Rentals are hard to find unless you are a college student or wealthy downtown empty nester -- and you don't seem to be the later with kids.
I'd be happy to extend this conversation.
Where are you going to work? What type of investment in homes do you want to make? Are you looking for some diversity -- or a more homogeneous setting?
