I have a 20 yr old daughter looking to move into an apt around Penn St in downtown Pittsburgh. I would like to know if that is a nice area, is it safe, what kind of things go on in the neighborhood, etc. Any help is much appreciated!|||Penn St, or Penn Ave are both fairly long streets. I would check into exactly what part of town it's in, what neighborhood... For Pittsburgh, "good" and "bad" streets can be right beside each other. However, there has also been a fairly strong movement towards younger professionals strengthening parts of town. Overall the city is fairly managable and fairly safe.|||I'm assuming that you mean Penn Avenue, which is several miles long. And if you do mean downtown then it is a very nice area. That is actually the city's theater district and it's a very nice part of town. There are obviously a lot of theaters, but also restaurants, art galleries, and a nearby subway stop. All of Downtown is very safe but this is probably the safest. It's well lighted. Filled with public art. Tree lined sidewalks. And this is the are where downtown's only full service grocery store will be opening.

You have nothing to worry about - you should be very excited.|||She must be going to Pitt, or Carnegie-Mellon.
Penn Ave is all college apartments when you get close to the schools. She'll be OK. Oakland [the part of Pittsburgh where the schools are] isn't that bad. She'll have friends and she'll learn the best places to go rather quickly.
